Quantum Consciousness, the Way to Reconcile Science & Spirituality

by Kingsley Dennis on July 12, 2010

Human thought in the 21st century needs to work towards a new model that immerses the human being within a vibrant energetic universe. However, this need not demand that we throw away what we already have; rather, we can expand upon the tools that have brought us to our present position. There is an eastern proverb that roughly translates as: ‘You may ride your donkey up to your front door, but would you ride it into your house?’ In other words, when we have arrived at a particular destination we are often required to make a transition in order to continue the journey. In this sense we can be grateful to a vast knowledge base of scientific and religious thought for helping us to arrive at where we presently stand. Yet it is now imperative that we move forward. As Deepak Chopra suggested in his opening contribution to this Forum, how we move forward is likely to be centered in our understanding of consciousness.

Our physical apparatus is spectacular; consider that each of us carries around a 100 billion-cell bioelectric quantum computer that creates our realities, with almost all of its neurons established the day we were born. Still, this phenomenal ‘reality shaper’ has undergone monumental perceptual change over our evolutionary history. What is required, at this significant juncture, is again another catalyst of consciousness change. This may come about through discoveries in the field of quantum biology, and the idea, emphasized by Ervin Laszlo in his previous blogs, that the form of consciousness we possess is likely to be the result of quantum coherence.

The human body is a constant flux of thousands of inter-reactions and processes connecting molecules, cells, organs, fluids, throughout the brain, body and nervous system. Up until recently it was thought that all these countless interactions operated in a linear sequence, passing on information much like a runner passing the baton to the next runner. However, the latest findings in quantum biology and biophysics have discovered that there is in fact a tremendous degree of coherence within all living systems. It has been found through extensive scientific investigation that a form of quantum coherence operates within living biological systems through what is known as biological excitations and biophoton emission. What this means is that metabolic energy is stored as a form of electromechanical and electromagnetic excitations. It is these coherent excitations that are considered responsible for generating and maintaining long-range order via the transformation of energy and very weak electromagnetic signals.

After nearly twenty years of experimental research, Fritz-Albert Popp put forward the hypothesis that biophotons are emitted from a coherent electrodynamic field within the living system. What this effectively means is that each living cell is giving off, and resonating with, a biophoton field of coherent energy. If each cell is emitting this field then the whole living system is, in effect, a resonating field—a ubiquitous non-local field. And since it is by the means of biophotons that the living system communicates, then there is near instantaneous intercommunication throughout. And this, claims Popp, is the basis for coherent biological organization—referred to as quantum coherence.

Biophysicist Mae Wan Ho has described how the living organism, including the human body, is “coherent beyond our wildest dreams” in that our bodies are constituted by a form of liquid crystal, which is an ideal transmitter of communication, resonance, and coherence. All living biological organisms continuously emit radiations of light that form a field of coherence and communication.

Moreover, biophysicists have discovered that living organisms are permeated by quantum wave forms. Ho informs us that,

…the visible body just happens to be where the wave function of the organism is most dense. Invisible quantum waves are spreading out from each of us and permeating into all other organisms. At the same time, each of us has the waves of every other organism entangled within our own make-up… (Ho, Mae-Wan, (1998) The Rainbow and the Worm: The Physics of Organisms. Singapore: World Scientific)

This incredible new discovery actually positions each living being within a non-local quantum field consisting of wave interferences (where bodies meet). Each person is thus not only in an emphatic relationship with each other but is also entangled with one another.

Neuroscience, quantum biology, and quantum physics are now beginning to converge to reveal that our bodies are not only biochemical systems but also sophisticated resonating quantum systems. These new discoveries show that a form of nonlocal connected consciousness has a physical-scientific basis. Further, it demonstrates that certain spiritual or transcendental states of collective Oneness have a valid basis within the new scientific paradigm.

If we are willing to step down from the donkey we will find that our new path ahead has a place for reconciling science and spirituality. We should focus on the best of both worlds: engage in cooperation, not in conflict and competition.

Kingsley, this is really exciting stuff you are writing about here. I need to go over it again and really think about concepts you are describing. I have this sense that there are so many correspondences with other ‘vocabularies’…and that is exciting for me. For now..the above reference to the wave as indicating a more dense manifestation catches my attention…for years I have been thinking about the significance and ramifications of the wave/particle ‘principle.’ Pardon my layperson language here…but I do believe I am understanding something from your writing!

Thank you Barbara for your reply…yes, as you say, there are now arising correspondences with vocabularies, which also helps to ‘connect-the-dots’ between emerging discoveries in science and transpersonal experiences. The work of Mae-Wan Ho (The Rainbow and the Worm: The Physics of Organisms) can be read alongside Michael Talbot’s ‘The Holographic Universe’ and Johnjoe MacFadden’s ‘Quantum Evolution’…..these works would also make sense alongside the investigations of Stanislav Grof, Ken Wilbur, and Christopher Bache… all towards a ‘bigger’ world (or universal?) picture…..

Best,

Kingsley

Good Morning Kingsley,
Again, I see we have been paying attention to the same people. Did I tell you that I ( many years ago–1980 I think it was) did a month-long intensive training (really intensive…8-12 hour days) with Stan Grof at Esalen? He brought in experts like Fritjof Capra and he spoke a great deal about the holographic universe, and he referred often to Ken Wilbur, so I of course began to read Ken Wilbur.

This forum is wonderful..I want to spend more time here, but am working to finish up our manuscript…now due at the publisher…the one on partnership…intutition and intellect which I mentioned to you. Would you like to see a copy, or excerpts, biblio…and so on? If so..you might let me know how to get that to you via email.
And just this morning… the back of my mind is trying to get my attention about another essay to write…that ‘needs’ writing…essentially about Lyall Watson ‘hundredth monkey’ theory (remember that none of us ever knows when we may be that 100th monkey!) and how critical that idea and possibility is right now. In 1983 I saw “The Day After” on tv…after the airing, a panel…Carl Sagan, Robert McNamara, and others, sat around a table for a discussion of how to prevent such a tragic event…no one could really come up with anything very constructive (in my view)…I remember thinking that “only the hundredth monkey dynamic can save us.” Vaclav Havel said back around that same time that unless we have a change in consciousness we will not survive. Stan Grof sent that message around widely in his newsletter, and other avenues. Now Ervin makes possible such a wonderful venue here to help that shift happen.
Good day..wherever you are!

Here is a bit from our book…section heading and a quotation from Watson’s “Lifetide”…do you know he died about this time two years ago…June 25, 2008….consider the lichens!!

Vision: Community—The Core of Progress

Living together for mutual benefit, a process known as symbiosis, is the best possible way of producing dramatic leaps. It involves no basic change in the genotype of either contributing partner and yet it results in an association which takes both members into a whole range of new situations with new possibilities for survival and growth. It is no accident that of all complex organisms on earth today, the group which contains the hardiest pioneers, those first to settle in all the most formidable terrestrial environments, are symbionts. They are found on rocks among the permanent snow on mountain tops, on outcroppings not far from the poles, and on sun-baked desert floors too hot to put your hand on. They have even been placed in liquid oxygen at –183 degrees Centigrade, or kept in a vacuum for six years, and still survived. These are the natural synthetics we call lichens. [Lyall Watson. Lifetide: The Biology of the Unconscious. New York: Bantam Books, 1980. (189:59.)

Nose back to the grindstone now…but before I log off here, I just noticed a photo of Neem Karoli Baba at the top of the page…brings back a memory from a time when I was going through some deep inner work…it happened that I woke in the night sometimes…with fears and so on…I would begin to just say “Neem Karoli Baba” over and over as a mantrum…my awareness would change and I could get back to sleep. I never met him, but Ram Dass told me about him…so I think he helped me…through those famous ‘ethers’…you know.

Just got an email from Dan Furst…I have been interested in the Dammanhur community for some time…he talks about it here.

Barbara – I like your comments on ‘community’ – both the symbiont aspect as well as the examples of Dammanhur (I had not heard of this community before). The work of evolutionary biologist Elisabet Sahtouris has done some great research on the symbiant nature of evolutionary cooperation (The Biology of Globalization). She has a free book online called ‘Earth Dance’ (see – http://www.ratical.com/LifeWeb/) which is a wonderfully informative book. Community is a way not only of humans learning re-balance but also, importantly, of people ‘working on themselves’ by ‘working with others’…it creates impacts for accelerated self-evolution (just read about the tales of working in Gurdjieff groups!)… this is an important subject which ties together the biological with the socio-cultural… getting closer to that elusive 100th monkey!

Thank you for the feedback and comments….

Yes! She’s wonderful. I remember a long conversation with her via the web back around 1999…and I downloaded her “Earth Dance”…That book should be a textbook, or at least required reading, in our schools! I suggested that she make an adapted version for elementary students. She said she thought that a great idea..don’t know if she ever did. But now is the time!

Teilhard de Chardin wrote in “The Divine Milieu”…(Harper, 1960) “It is almost a commonplace today to find men who, quite naturally and unaffectedly, life in the explicit consciousness of being an atom or a citizen of the universe.”

Powerful paragraphs here below–from your essay: “After nearly twenty years of experimental research, Fritz-Albert Popp put forward the hypothesis that biophotons are emitted from a coherent electrodynamic field within the living system. What this effectively means is that each living cell is giving off, and resonating with, a biophoton field of coherent energy. I really love reading and pondering…and yes, I have learned to leave my donkey at the door upon special occasions….but I always ask him to wait for me…I will no doubt need him when I have to go shopping. I am suddenly remembering a “chapter book” which my son-in-law was reading to my very young, at the time, grandchildren around Christmastime one year…”Mary’s Little Donkey”…the donkey’s thoughts as he carried Mary, Jesus and Joseph into Egypt…fine book. Our myths can teach us a lot….metaphorically. And if we don’t develop the metaphorical mind in our educational approach…we may just be toast!

Keep on keeping on…

“As we swim now in the sea of evolving consciousness, we can reflect upon the task of the small creatures stranded in landlocked tide pools when ancient waters receded. Their task, in order to survive, was to internalize the supporting structure, the sea water, and so the circulatory system was developed. Now we too must internalize an intelligent distillation of the best values from our centuries of civilization. We must internalize the best from that supporting social structure. We must individualize and individuate. We must develop the radial energy, the heart energy, within each of us so that we can come together motivated from within rather than pushed together from without by exigencies of the state. Only through a coming together from the within can the optimum development of the individual, as well as the optimum development of the collective become a reality. Only then will we see true freedom and true responsibility as humankind.” [from the forthcoming "Brain Power: Partnering at the New Round Table in Camelot" by Sheldon Stoff and Barbara Smith Stoff]

I feel this with all my heart!!!

After watching the news over lunch today, here in America…here are my thoughts:

Kristallnacht in America????

We here in our ivory towers discuss community and global coherence and collective Oneness…yet here in the United States—some say the United States is a lab for the rest of the world—we need to be aware of what is happening upon the sands of the Arizona desert. This proposed Arizona law against Mexican ‘immigrants’ which is being contested by federal courts is significant in that it speaks to important principles of human evolution. Are we, as humankind, going to evolve into a cooperative system here on on this planet…or are we, as Americans, going to sleep through our “chaos point—decision window” as we watch the latest gossip on broadcast television? Are we going to be willing to make the effort to study a bit below the surface regarding what is being decided here? Are we going to belly up to the bar and offer a heart-considered opinion? Or are we going to take in the slogans offered up on the ‘popular’ media without considering the depths below the facile words?

Barbara, I am in agreement with what you wrote in your book extract; eg – “Their task, in order to survive, was to internalize the supporting structure, the sea water, and so the circulatory system was developed. Now we too must internalize an intelligent distillation of the best values from our centuries of civilization.”

The notion of Quantum Consciousness may well be an ‘energetic reality’ in that it underlies some of the processes operating at energetic biological field levels; yet its physical manifestation comes through people being together. Is is important that ideas are not left as imaginal concepts but are realised in our working lives – and by ‘working’ I don’t mean our jobs, but our lives in which we ‘work’ upon ourselves. And we learn and grow through people and with people – our social structures are incredibly important, as we need to renew them in these changing times and to facilitate a more efficient and harmonious ‘circulatory system’…an open system that is negentropic (ie. goes from lower and higher energy) rather than systems that move to lower-energy states….

In other words, consciousness is the glue for our social structures….

This makes it significant how we treat other people, and those we deem ‘strangers’…as closed-systems always inevitably decay… we need to be open and adaptive….

Best wishes

Kingsley…very beautiful words here…thank you. Being aware of the laws which obtain in oppositional/confrontational actions, I have been concerned about my recent post re Arizona happenings…and yet…and yet…

What I ‘got’ from reading about the “hundredth monkey” principle, oh so many years ago, is that we always need to monitor our moments, because none of us knows when we may be that hundredth monkey…so it’s important to know what we are being, doing, thinking, at any moment, because that is going out into the ‘noosphere’ …the akashic web…always and always. The Ilya Prigogine work supports this idea/feeling too. Actually, I think I have known this, intuitively, since I was very young.

Our manuscript has gone to the publisher…I am valuing your comments very much. May I use some of your words when they ask for comments from readers? And would you like to see more of the work? Hard work days these…keep on keeping on…

Quantum electrodynamics + Biology: Who am I ?
==.
Cells make copies of themselves.
Different cells make different copies of themselves.
Cells come in all shapes and sizes.
Somehow these different cells are tied between themselves
and during pregnancy process of 9 months gradually ( ! )
and by chance ( or not by chance ) they change own
geometrical form from zygote to a child.
Cells come in all shapes and sizes, and then . . . they are you.
Cells they are you ( !? )
This is modern biomechanical /chemical point of view.
#
Maybe 99% agree that ‘Cells – they are you .’
But this explanation is not complete.
Cells have an energy / electrical potential.
Cells have an electromagnetic field.
Therefore we need to say:
‘ Cells and electromagnetic field – they are you.’
===.
Is this formulation correct?
Of course it is correct.
Why?
Because:
Bioelectromagnetism (sometimes equated with bioelectricity)
refers to the electrical, magnetic or electromagnetic fields
produced by living cells, tissues or organisms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioelectromagnetism

What does it mean?
It means there isn’t biological cell without electromagnetic fields.
It means that in the cell we have two ( 2 ) substances:
matter and electromagnetic fields.
And in 1985 Richard P. Feynman wrote book:
QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter

The idea of book – the interaction between light
( electromagnetic fields ) and matter is strange.

He wrote: ‘ The theory of quantum electrodynamics
describes Nature as absurd from the point of view
of common sense. And it agrees fully with experiment.
So I hope you accept Nature as She is — absurd. ‘
/ page 10. /
#
Once again:
1.
Cells and electromagnetic field – they are you.
2.
We cannot understand their interaction and therefore
we don’t know the answer to the question: ‘ who am I ?’
==.
Where does electromagnetic field come from ?
=.
In 1904 Lorentz proved: there isn’t electromagnetic field
( em waves ) without Electron
It means the source of these em waves must be an Electron
The electron and the em waves they are physical reality
Can evolution of consciousness begin on electron’s level?
==.
Origin of life is a result of physical laws that govern Universe
Electron takes important part in this work.
#
1900, 1905
Planck and Einstein found the energy of electron: E=h*f.
1916
Sommerfeld found the formula of electron : e^2=ah*c,
it means: e = +ah*c and e = -ah*c.
1928
Dirac found two more formulas of electron’s energy:
+E=Mc^2 and -E=Mc^2.
According to QED in interaction with vacuum electron’s
energy is infinite: E= ∞
Questions.
Why does the simplest particle – electron have six ( 6 ) formulas ?
Why does electron obey five ( 5) Laws ?
a) Law of conservation and transformation energy/ mass
b) Maxwell’s equations
c) Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle / Law
d) Pauli Exclusion Principle/ Law
e) Fermi-Dirac statistics.

Nobody knows.
====.
What is an electron ?
Now nobody knows
In the internet we can read hundreds theories about electron
All of them are problematical.
We can read hundreds books about philosophy of physics.
But how can we trust them if we don’t know what is an electron ?
====.
Quote by Heinrich Hertz on Maxwell’s equations:

“One cannot escape the feeling that these mathematical formulae
have an independent existence and an intelligence of their own,
that they are wiser than we are, wiser even than their discoverers,
that we get more out of them than was originally put into them.”
====.
Ladies and Gentlemen !
Friends !
The banal Electron is not as simple as we think and, maybe,
he is wiser than we are.
=====.
Once again: Brain and Electron.
Human brain works on two levels:
consciousness and subconsciousness. The neurons of brain
create these two levels. So, that it means consciousness and
subconsciousness from physical point of view ( interaction
between billions and billions neurons and electron).
It can only mean that the state of neurons in these two
situations is different.
How can we understand these different states of neurons?
How does the brain generate consciousness?
We can understand this situation only on the quantum level,
only using Quantum theory. But there isn’t QT without
Quantum of Light and Electron. So, what is interaction between
Quantum of Light, Electron and brain ? Nobody knows.
Therefore I say:
we must understand not only the brain but electron too.
And when we understand the Electron
we will know the Ultimate Nature of Reality.
===.
Best wishes.

You say: “Each person is thus not only in an emphatic relationship with each other but is also entangled with one another.” SPOT ON! This is key. And we can investigate it if we consider the true causes of all the major diseases. This entanglement brings with it the ability to convey ideas directly through mental means alone BUT only through relationship.. close relationship. As you can read here http://kyrani99.wordpress.com/ and once this is understood the human kind can take a giant level up, to a new paradigm in science as also to the greater possibility for easy and successful spiritual endeavour.
